Analyzing Analytics

Using Google Analytics this week really opened my eyes to a whole new way of understanding my personal website. While I might have been the one to create it, I did so in the dark, so to speak. Now, with a whole new toolbelt of information, I can understand why I would want to make it work in certain ways. This is really helpful in the following:

I can look at what sort of device is viewing my website
I created the website, as most people do, on a computer and viewed my website during creation on my preferred browser. So while I did include media sizes into my code with generic breakpoints, I did so with the assumption that most people would be viewing it the same way I was. Was I ever wrong. A quick look at my analytics toolbar just now shows that 70% of people are doing so on their mobile phones. This is why in this day and age they tell you to build mobile first.

I can see what pages people most look at and how long they stay there
This is useful for me in two ways because I created two different portions of my site. First off, within the e-commerce section, it is great to see which products are being viewed vs how many are being bought. It also can show me where I should market for my products that are not being viewed at all. Secondly, it shows how many of my visitors are interested in me as a company rather than just the products I am advertising. For branding purposes, this is really important information.

I can see where people are viewing my website from
This may seem unimportant without knowing that I currently only ship to the United States. So if 50% of my viewers are from out of the state, I am not going to be doing well. I have even checked out my AdWords account to see if I am only promoting in the US. Yep. Still am. So Analytics also works for me as a debugging software as well as gleaning marketing information.

These are just a few of the wonderful things I have noticed in the two days I have had Google Analytics attached to my page. Overall, I am looking forward to what I can find in the future.
