Creative Creativity

As this week went by, the entrepreneurial class I am part of is focusing on creativity. While all of the readings and materials discussed how creativity is good for your business, I kept thinking that creativity is my business. How then can I make creativity creative? I guess it all depends on how we choose to perceive it.

Immix Games may not be off the ground yet, but the name literally means to mix it up. That is the purpose, to change the status quo of board games so that our games are not pigeoned holed into any typical style of game. This requires a lot of creativity on our parts. What we need to do then is to foster an environment where that creativity can be the most creative.

What can be a great product (game) that encourages the players to be creative and not exclude those people who think, "well I am not creative so that game is not for me." We know that all can be creative. They simply need the right environment to foster it.

I dreamt of the future. Falling asleep one night I was transported into 10 years from now and I saw our headquarters. The next morning I created it in an architectural program, ensuring that I had the right style of setup to foster that creativity. Offices were created for those who really needed a space to go and work unhindered. All the front walls are made of glass though so that the employees will be able to feel an open part of the environment.

These offices converge around a large open section with a large table where we can go to have meetings, and playtest our games. That area, when not in those meetings, will be for our development department to play to their heart's content with new possibilities. One of these walls is full of cubbyholes where every one of our prototypes will go - to be played with time and time again by employees who simply desire to seek inspiration.

Each day, they will have an hour to spend on whatever project they want. It doesn't even need to be for our company. They just have to do it on site.

This environment and building were designed for that creativity. I am going to also be creative in the startup. As I was reading the Toilet Paper Entrepreneur, I was struck by how many things he mentioned that are part of the status quo that need to be done away with. He threw away the business plan. He says they never work and then suggested 3 documents that will take its place with a more active role in your company. I am going to be following this suggestion, but it made me think about what else is done to start up a business simply because that's how it has been done before. What else can streamline and creatively start a company?

I was also slightly concerned with our name picked out. Immix Games is exciting and raw, but have we pigeon holed ourselves by sliding in a product? Could we do more than games in the future? I already have designed products that would be more considered as a toy. Definitely not a board game, but I think games still is okay. Immix by itself sounds bland, but Immix Games sounds exciting. I could be wrong, but then again, I could be wrong about potentially being wrong.
